Introduction: Understanding Climate Mobility & Displacement
As climate change progresses, it is more important than ever to understand its impact on human mobility. According to UNHCR, climate-related disasters caused 60% of internal displacement as of 2022. This crisis demands urgent action from all sectors, especially organizations focused on mobility and justice like CMCAN. According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), climate-related disasters have caused 60% of internal displacement of refugees and migrants as of 2022 (UNHCR, 2023). Another fact according to the World Bank: 216 million could migrate because of climate change by 2050 (World Bank, 2022). Some places in the world like South Africa and Latin America are seeing more than thousands of people migrating or displaced because of weather-related events. This not only impacts a person’s economic well-being but culturally and socially as well.
Climate mobility and displacement are two important topics that The Climate Mobility Community Action Network (CMCAN) works to address. We are different from other organizations because of our focus on bringing the voices and experiences of those impacted to the table. We do this through collaboration, education, and by providing a platform for diverse stakeholders to come together and work towards long-term solutions.
We recognize the high urgency of these two topics and the need for concrete action. That’s why we emphasize diverse voices and teamwork—to provide skills, networks, resources, and knowledge that help build sustained, effective action. Climate mobility and displacement cannot be tackled by one person; it requires collective effort in the form of a strong, inclusive network.

CMCAN works to do that through various engagements like our different projects and advocacy initiatives.
Evidence-Based
CMCAN is committed to providing the most up-to-date resources and knowledge on climate mobility and displacement. That will be done by bringing in experts, people with lived experiences, and various stakeholders in this area.
Network Building
CMCAN believes that tackling climate mobility and displacement cannot be done by one person. This is why it is vital to build a network of different entities and stakeholders to come and work on these topics. That can be through partnerships, events, workshops, and other projects globally and domestically.
